Alan L. Chisholm

Alan L. ChisholmAlan is a Pastoral Psychotherapist who has been in practice for over 35 years.  His journey has taken him from an undergraduate major in Physics, to seminary and 15 years in parish ministry as an Episcopal priest, to training and certification in pastoral psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

He has been director of the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Institute at St. Bartholomew’s Church in midtown since 1993, and has been associated with PSI and its predecessor, CHDC, since 1975.  In addition to an active practice of individual and couples therapy, he offers premarital counseling using the PREPARE inventory. He has offered workshops in marital enrichment, and for two years led a “Between Jobs” support group at St. Bart’s.  At PSI, he has served as a clinical supervisor and coordinator of continuing education.

Among his special interests are working with people who are

  • struggling with depression
  • in Twelve Step recovery programs
  • working through blocks to growth
  • seeking to contact their feelings and find new energy for living
  • looking for more connected communication as a couple
  • defining who they are and clarifying their vocation
  • dealing with envy, shame or other unwanted feelings
  • Trying to manage hate in relationships.

Alan is a Diplomate in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, and is a Licensed Psychoanalyst in New York State.
